Educational Qualification
Applicants must hold a full-time Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Technology, in branches such as Mechanical, Production, Production and Industrial, Manufacturing, Railways, Mechatronics and Automobile, from an AICTE-recognised institution. Sections A and B of the Institution of Engineers (India) examination, treated as equivalent to a degree, are also accepted. UR and EWS candidates need first class or minimum 60 percent marks, while SC, ST, OBC-NCL and PwBD candidates applying against reserved posts need 50 percent.
Along with the degree, candidates must have at least two years of post-qualification outdoor work experience in production, mechanical maintenance or other mechanical engineering areas, gained at a project site, factory or plant. Training, internship, teaching and research periods do not count, though apprenticeship under the Apprenticeship Act 1961 in the relevant area is accepted.

Written Test Pattern and Qualifying Marks
The written test has 125 objective questions of one mark each with a duration of 2.5 hours and no negative marking; PwBD candidates get 50 minutes compensatory time. Minimum qualifying marks are 50% for UR/EWS and 45% for reserved categories in the written test, and 60% for UR/EWS and 50% for reserved categories in the interview. Final merit is based on 60% weightage for the written test and 40% for the interview. The syllabus broadly covers Applied Mechanics and Design, Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences, and Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering.
Written Test Centres
Candidates must give two centre preferences during online application. The test is planned at six cities: Delhi/Gurgaon, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai, Guwahati and Bhubaneswar. All centres except Delhi/Gurgaon are tentative and depend on candidate numbers and RITES’ discretion; exact venue, date and time will be communicated separately.
Probation and Service Conditions
Appointment is initially on probation for one year, and candidates must clear a screening test at the end of probation for confirmation. Selected candidates are liable for posting anywhere in India and abroad, and no application for outside jobs is forwarded until 2 years of service is completed.
